A snow tires job is to provide grip in loose or hard packed snow. They accomplish this by use of softer compounds, sharp edges and sipes to bite into available snow. Then they self clean to remove snow from the tire. This provides the most surface area possible

The days of two snow tires on the drive wheels are gone. Snow tires work the best when they are used at all 4 corners. This gives the ability to both accelerate as well as stop and turn.
